SeaLink Capital Partners (“SCP”) has led an investment of Rs. 2,000 mm into Surya Children’s Medicare Pvt Ltd (“Surya” or the “Company”). Surya is Western India’s largest children’s hospital specializing in high-risk maternity and neonatal and paediatric intensive care. The transaction included an infusion of growth capital into the Company and a purchase of the stake held by OrbiMed. Heramb Hajarnavis and Karthik Narayanaswamy, Managing Partner and Executive Director respectively at SCP, are joining the Board of Directors of Surya.
Surya was founded in 1983 by renowned paediatrician, Dr. B.S. Avasthi. Surya currently has three hospitals in Mumbai, Pune and Jaipur with plans for further expansion in the next few years.  It has India’s largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Western India’s only teaching institute for Paediatric Intensive Care. 

India has amongst the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world. One out of every four pre-term babies in the world is born in India. Increased prevalence of fertility treatments has led to more complex and high-risk pregnancies requiring further need for gynaecological specialization. The rising pre-term birth rates and maternal complications have created an urgent need to improve clinical outcomes. Moreover, almost 30% of India’s population is under the age of 14 and requires both preventive and curative paediatric care. There is however, a significant undersupply of paediatric hospital beds in the country with an estimated deficit of nearly 200,000 beds.
